Jeff is honored to have worked for three years with his hero, [[Ken Wilber|'''Ken Wilber''']], in developing the Integral Institute, and their historic seminars on integral application in business, psychology and spirituality. Jeff can’t believe his luck to live two doors down from his other integral hero, philosopher Steve McIntosh, who is a dear friend. Jeff is on the Board of Steve’s think tank, The Institute for Cultural Evolution. Jeff is co-founder of CareerTrack Training, an adult education company he and his partner built into an international organization producing 3000+ seminars annually, and employing 300+ people. Jeff co-founded Boulder Integral, a bricks and mortar center for integral study and practice, that drew people from all over the world. A long-time practitioner in several spiritual traditions, Jeff has taught meditation and led many retreats. He has a Masters Degree in Indo-Tibetan Buddhism from Naropa University (2006).

The Story: The Side View is about the knowledge and intuition we use to navigate the world. It’s about how our minds meet the world, but it’s also about how our minds, when trained in the right way, change how we perceive what’s around us and within us. In other words, The Side View is about how we become skillful perceivers and doers, people who know, in the moment, the right details to attend to and the right actions to take. But The Side View isn’t just about expertise or getting more efficient at things; it’s about learning how to deepen our engagement with a complex world. The idea is that we can develop new ways of making sense of things, ways that change what we’re able to do in the world. From our perspective, sensemaking is its own kind of craft, and the medium of this craft isn’t paint or stone or wood, but your own perception. Perception on this view is a skill you can shape through practice. We see our ability to pay attention to things as an art of its own. It’s an art of looking at things in a certain way. These are good taglines for The Side View—attention is an art form; perception is a skill—but when we dig deeper into what this approach really means, to what it makes possible for us in our lives, we find something more interesting: When we start to look at our own perception in this way, we find that we can actually take hold of some of these dynamics and change them. In a way, the whole process of learning is about creating these transformations in perception. The Side View is about making sense of this process.

By looking at perception and experience, we’re making sense of how we make sense. We draw from philosophers, scientists, and athletes, as well as designers, artists, and contemplatives. What connects these approaches is the idea of practice, and the understanding that practice—in whatever discipline—is first and foremost about transforming perception and our ability to act in the world. Today there’s a tendency to focus only on the facts that experts produce, but we look at these people from a different angle. We study how they learn to see the world in new ways to begin with. Take the architect as an example. The architect sees with an eye for design that the rest of us do not have, with a capacity for understanding how we might shape the environment and how the environment might shape us.

There’s a level of understanding at work here that’s unique to architects, but we can say the same of carpenters, meditators, or athletes—they all have heightened levels of perceptual ability, and unique capacities for sense-making cultivated through practice, experience, and learning. The point is, this approach applies to practices of prayer and mindfulness just as much as it does to practices of athletics and engineering. The ancient Greeks used the word ''askēsis'', meaning exercise or training, to describe this process of transformation. We’re using this concept to explore the training needed to create skillful means in any endeavor. This kind of practice happens in specific environments, with specific people, at specific times. Set and setting matter. Other people matter. Our hope is that when we understand the nature of this process, new possibilities will open up for each of us in our own lives, possibilities that would otherwise remain hidden or inaccessible.

The central problem is how all-important abstract (systemic) issues such as climate change and institutional racism become obfuscated and marginalized through market forces and cognitive biases, in turn producing self-defeating abstract wars of attrition against populations and the environment. This status-quo is exacerbated by our constant crisis of epistemic authority, where public trust is eroded, the mainstream media is corrupt and misinformative, and knowledge is instrumentalized at the expense of truth. The problem is in fact overdetermined by a nexus of causal factors. In response, we seek to simplify the meta- crises in order to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio in civil discourse to correct these aberrations at the root level.

The prefix "meta-" (variously denoting change, beyond, above, etc.) has many vital uses that coalesce with the advent of metamodernity. The concepts of “metacognition” (thinking about thinking) and “metanoia” (to change one’s mind) are central to intellectual revolution. "Meta-analysis” reveals unknown common truths across conceptually related studies, providing a ‘big picture’ perspective and quality control. The study of "metaphysics" as social humanism reclaims it as a ‘philosophy of first principles,’ and highlights the distinction between physical and social science. Marx's notion of "metabolic rift" theorizes the entropy of ecological and social systems under capitalism, granting us the necessary foresight to prevent such dehumanizing decay. As a novel enterprise, TATO aims to be the superlative "meta-" think tank to apply these insights, coordinating epistemic communities and solving fundamental contradictions at an abstract level. Many conventional think tanks are demonstrably partial and have been increasingly corporatized under neoliberalism, undermining their function as progenitors of objective thought. Our role is in part to compel corporate social responsibility in the marketplace of ideas, with a program of capitalist "absolution" as a system-wide process of truth and reconciliation.

The Business Plan is our “Proof of Concept” which details the vision, mission, and prospective advantages of TATO, the credentials and qualifications of its Executive Director and associates, our internal governance structure, strategy, and the sources and uses of funding. The Long Now Foundation was established in 01996* to develop the Clock and Library projects, as well as to become the seed of a very long-term cultural institution. The Long Now Foundation hopes to provide counterpoint to today's "faster/cheaper" mind set and promote "slower/better" thinking in the framework of the next 10,000 years. Positions: 1. The Name The term was coined by one of our founding board members, Brian Eno. When Brian first moved to New York City he found that in New York here and now meant this room and this five minutes, as opposed to the larger here and longer now that he was used to in England. We have since adopted the term as the title of our foundation as we are trying to stretch out what people consider as now. The Long Now Foundation uses five digit dates, the extra zero is to solve the deca-millennium bug which will come into effect in about 8,000 years.

In doing so, we also then increase our capacity to love and serve both ourselves and humanity. At least, that's the intention we hold. Intentional Society is simply people, in process, being and doing together… and its fullness is in the process of being both created and discovered.

We are a geographically distributed community of seekers and friends, connecting face-to-face via video calls. We connect and reflect together in relationship as a catalyst to self-development, increased awareness, greater integrity. We relish our diversity across gender, generation, nation, ethnicity, religious (or non-) background, socioeconomic status, and other perspectives increasingly. Some of us bring backgrounds in various related fields or scenes: adult development psychology, relational practices (e.g. Authentic Relating, Circling, Collective Presencing), and the "sensemaking web" (e.g. Game B, Integral, Metamodernism). Regardless, all of us are united in one thing above all else: seeking to grow.

Our values orient around ''awareness'' and ''acceptance'' as the big themes. Awareness means consciousness and attention: taking the "balcony view" perspective on ourselves and on the people and systems we're intereacting with. Who and what makes a good "fit" within Intentional Society? The cornerstone of our culture is first and foremost a desire to grow. It also takes an attitude of openness, humility, and of respect toward every human and the things that we can learn from interacting with them. We don't teach each other as instructors or lecturers, but rather reflect our experience of being with each other. When reflected in an honest and compassionate way, we are able self-teachers with socially-expanded insight.

Many new members thus far have come in with a high degree of emotional self-awareness and "cognitive de-fusion," having been on their own developmental journeys for some time already. This seems helpful but not essential, and we haven't established a concrete minimum age or maturity level for membership yet. If someone is looking for a bandwagon to just jump on wholeheartedly, this isn't it. Some level of "self-authorship" - defining one's self and values independently of the social context in which one grew up - seems necessary to get traction on further development.

Lastly, most of us have a fairly high degree of tolerance for nebulosity, uncertainty, and abstraction. We're making this up as we go, creating just-in-time structure as we need it. Sometimes we lean into the not-knowing - playing and sensing without pre-selecting a norm, so that we can feel into the desires and intentions we bring to a domain rather than relying on conventional or implicit norms and expectations.

They are also interdependent, and together, these aspects of our cognitive, intellectual and emotional development produce a multi-dimensional inner world that can be stimulated, inspired and challenged in many different ways.

Another aspect relates to existential meaning and autonomy: In order for individuals to be empowered and gain autonomy over their own life, part of the moral and emotional development is existential meaning, a sense of purpose and personal agency. Both the expansion of the inner world and the existential meaning and autonomy evolve and emerge from engaging with the surrounding culture, which provides us with language, aesthetics, symbolic worlds, moral values, and ethics and thus the ability to connect with others and with society.

Bildung, therefore, is a process of individual maturing and taking upon oneself ever bigger personal responsibilities towards family, friends, fellow citizens, society, humanity, our globe, and the global heritage of our species, while enjoying ever greater personal, moral and existential freedoms. Bildung is the enculturation and life-long learning that allows us to grow and change, it is existential and emotional depth, it is life-long interaction and struggles with new knowledge, culture, art, science, morality, ethics, spirituality, religion, aesthetics, perspectives, people, and truths, and it is being an active citizen in adulthood. Bildung is emancipation and a constant process that never ends.

The process in this development can be happenstance or a deliberate choice and any mix thereof, and Bildung can be summed up, not as a curriculum, but as CREATE: Consciousness Responsibility Empowerment Action Transformation Emancipation.

Through our ongoing inquiry, we establish a shared intellectual foundation and build our collective capacity to address humanity’s root problems.

Denizen is a fast growing community that includes a diverse array of individuals: entrepreneurs, scholars, artists, activists, influencers, recording artists, designers, investors, nonprofit leaders, and more. '''About''': The Daily Evolver looks at current events in politics and culture through the lens of integral theory. Integral theory is a school of philosophy that seeks to integrate all of human wisdom into a new worldview that is able to accommodate the gifts of all previous worldviews, including those which have been historically at odds: science and religion, East and West, as well as pre-modernity, modernity and post-modernity. Integral theory builds on the foundations of evolutionary theory. We know from ever-more sophisticated observation that the cosmos burst into being about 13.8 billion years ago, first as energy then as matter, arising as atoms and molecules that formed the heavenly bodies, including our home planet, Earth. Integral theory posits that evolution is not limited to the exterior forms of reality (matter and organisms), but is also evident in the interior spaces of reality, namely in the development of culture and consciousness.

The thesis of The Daily Evolver is that life is animated by the power of evolution, inside and out, and that we are riding a geyser of emergence toward a sacred world. In this blog I will make that case or grow trying! Alas, geyser riding is harrowing and I, like you, plainly see the suffering world. But what we also see is the arc of history, where with all of humanity’s wrong turns and regressions there emerges a clear trajectory of people (in the aggregate) living longer, more peacefully and with more wealth, century by century. A process that is accelerating. In this view suffering is a call to action. None of us really achieves happiness until all beings achieve happiness. Thus, there is no end of work to do. But, please people, let’s do it with joy in our hearts, because we are on a sacred journey. And considering we crawled out of the mud, we’re doing pretty darn well. This is what I try to point out on this blog. I am a current events junkie and delight in interpreting emerging politics and culture through a lens of consciousness evolution. So to make virtue out of passion, I offer The Daily Evolver.
